Nikkah Dress Ideas for Brides: White, Off-White, Pastel and Modest

Ivory shirt with multicolour resham fan motifs, gota borders and a sequinned dupatta, laid flat

The nikkah is the ceremony that makes the marriage, and its dress is the quietest of the wedding week. No heavy
zardozi, no deep red: the nikkah bride is soft, covered and glowing, and the photographs from that afternoon are often
the ones that end up framed. Here are the nikkah looks brides in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia ask us for most,
with what suits each one.

1. The white or off-white nikkah dress

White has become the nikkah colour for brides abroad. Off-white, ivory and pearl are softer than a stark white and
flatter more skin tones. The classic shape is a long shirt with a sharara or gharara, finished with a long dupatta or
veil worked along its edge.

Handwork on a white nikkah dress is tone-on-tone: pearls, white and silver naqshi, fine sequins, a little crystal.
The effect is light catching rather than colour. If you want a touch of colour, a pale gold or rose-gold border does
it without taking away the softness.

2. The soft green nikkah dress

Green is the traditional nikkah colour, and pistachio, sage and mint are its modern shades. A sage nikkah outfit with
silver or pearl work looks fresh in daylight and photographs beautifully against white or cream backdrops. Emerald
works for an evening nikkah with gold handwork.

3. Pastels: blush, powder blue, lilac

For daytime ceremonies, blush pink, powder blue, lilac and peach are the pastels brides choose. These suit a pishwas or
a flowing long shirt with a light dupatta, worked in self-colour resham and pearls. Blush with silver is the most
asked for.

4. The simple, elegant nikkah dress

Some brides want the nikkah to be the plainest event of the week: a clean long shirt, minimal handwork at the
neckline and hem, an organza dupatta with a narrow border. The elegance comes from the cut and the fabric (raw silk,
organza, chiffon) rather than from embellishment. This is also the most comfortable nikkah outfit for a long afternoon.

5. The nikkah dress with a veil

A long veil over the head during the ceremony is a strong tradition and a beautiful photograph. It can be the
dupatta itself, worn long over the head and shoulders, or a separate lightweight net veil with a worked edge, over a
shorter dupatta. If you plan to wear the veil over your head, tell your maker: the border is placed so it frames the
face, and the length is cut so it does not drag.

6. The nikkah dress with a hijab

Many brides wear a hijab at the nikkah and want the outfit designed for it rather than adapted at the last minute.
That means full sleeves, a higher neckline, a longer shirt, and a dupatta or veil in a fabric that sits well over a
hijab without slipping. A matching or contrast hijab in the same fabric family finishes it. Our
modest bridal page shows how any design becomes a modest one.

7. A lehenga for the nikkah

A lehenga is not only for the barat. A light nikkah lehenga in ivory or blush, with a short choli and a long dupatta
over the head, is a popular choice for brides who want a fuller silhouette. Keep the work lighter than a barat piece.

Which silhouette for your nikkah?

  • Long shirt with sharara or gharara: the most traditional, easy to sit in for the ceremony.
  • Pishwas: a full-flared frock, graceful and very photogenic, good for daytime.
  • Long shirt with straight trousers: the most modern and understated.
  • Gown or maxi: for an evening nikkah combined with a dinner.
  • Light lehenga: for brides who want a fuller skirt.

Fabrics that work for the nikkah

Raw silk holds its shape and suits a structured shirt. Organza is crisp and airy and takes delicate work. Chiffon and
net drape softly and are the choice for veils and dupattas. For a winter nikkah, a light velvet in sage or blush is
warm and rich.

Planning your nikkah dress from abroad

Every nikkah piece we make is to order in our own workshop in Pakistan, so the colour, the sleeve, the neckline and the
veil are decided with you rather than taken off a rack. Brides send us a look they love, often a white dress they want
in sage, or a design they want made modest, and we plan it together on WhatsApp with fabric photos before any cutting
starts.

A nikkah piece takes 8 to 12 weeks to make, plus shipping to the UK, USA, Canada or Australia, so write to us at least
four months before your date. How it works walks through the steps, and
the nikkah page shows pieces made in our workshop.

Questions brides ask

White or off-white? Off-white and ivory flatter more skin tones and photograph softer; stark white can wash out under daylight. If you love white, we show you two or three shades on fabric before deciding.

Can the nikkah dress be worn again? A simpler nikkah outfit in a pastel or ivory becomes a walima guest or Eid outfit later. Brides often plan the nikkah piece to be the one they wear again.

Do I need a separate veil? Not always. A long dupatta worn over the head does the job and keeps the piece lighter. A separate veil suits a shorter dupatta or a lehenga.

How light can the handwork be? As light as you like. A clean long shirt with a worked neckline and border is a complete nikkah look, and it is the easiest to wear for a long afternoon.
